Introduction: My Love- Hate Relationship with Ubuntu

Between 2010 and 2018, I used to be a fan of different flavours of Ubuntu:  Specifically, Xubuntu, ZorinOS, and Ubuntu Mate. But the stock Ubuntu releases were never my preferred poison. Around late 2017, I got introduced to the different Linux Distributions that are based on Ubuntu.

This post mentions present and now discontinued distributions.

Thanks largely to Distrowatch, I became acquainted with Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Linux Lite, Enso Linux, BOSS Linux, Hamara Linux, Voyager Linux, and the ExTix family of distributions. In 2022, I tested out PopOs and KDE Neon. Early this year, I gave Tuxedo OS a try.

Downsides of Ubuntu Based Linux Distributions

Ubuntu-based Linux distributions, such as Linux Mint, Zorin OS, and Elementary OS, come with their share of limitations that users should be aware of before making the switch. In this blog post, we take a closer look at the downsides of using a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu and explore some of the issues that users might face.

Potential for bloatware

One downside of using an Ubuntu-based distribution is the potential for bloatware. Due to its focus on user-friendliness, Ubuntu often includes additional software packages that may not be necessary for all users. This can lead to a bloated system with unnecessary applications taking up valuable disk space.

Desktop versions might not be best choice for experienced hands

This is likely to be a controversial take. Ubuntu-based distributions are generally considered beginner-friendly due to their ease of use and extensive documentation available online. However, they may not be the best choice for experienced Linux users seeking a more hands-on experience or those who prefer a more lightweight distribution. More advanced users may want to customize their operating system.

Resource Usage

Full fledged Ubuntu-based distributions can be resource-hungry, with some requiring more memory and processing power than other distributions. This can be a problem for users with older or less powerful computers.

Snaps

Snaps are a new type of package format that is being developed by Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu. Snaps are designed to be more secure and reliable than traditional packages, but they can also be more difficult to manage.

Corporate ownership

Ubuntu is owned and developed by Canonical. This means that Canonical has control over the direction of the project, and some users may be concerned about this.
